An important update to guests staying with us late October – Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has announced that work will begin after Labour Day (Monday 27th October) to replace the Boundary Creek Bridge on SH25, Thames Coast (between Thames and Coromandel Township). To complete this important upgrade, a section of SH25 between Te Mata and Waikawau will be closed for seven days immediately from Wednesday, 29th October. The project will deliver a much safer two-lane bridge with a slow-traffic passing bay on the southern approach – and it will all be ready before the busy summer season.
We are taking this time to do an urgent upgrade to the entrance of our park – we will unfortunately be closed from 10am Tuesday, 28th October to 12pm Thursday 6th October while the concrete cures. Please note this is subject to change i.e. weather. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.
It’s business as usual across the rest of Coromandel peninsula, and there are still plenty of ways to explore, relax, and enjoy everything our region has to offer.
Getting Around During the Closure
-
Heading north to Coromandel Town, Colville and beyond: Take SH25A from Kopu over the Kopu-Hikuai, then continue via Tairua and Whitianga.
-
Travelling south from Coromandel Town: Just reverse the above route.
-
Visiting Thames or the Thames Coast: These areas remain open, but you’ll need to return the same way before continuing your journey.
Make the Most of the Scenic Route
Yes, it may take a little longer, but that just means more time to enjoy the journey.
The Kopu-Hikuai route takes you through some of the Coromandel’s most beautiful spots:
- Tairua – Climb up to Paku Hill for panoramic views, or stop for a coffee at one of the local cafés.
- Whitianga – A perfect stop for a meal by the water, a soak at The Lost Spring, or a ferry ride across to Ferry Landing.
- Hahei & Hot Water Beach (side trip) – If time allows, detour to dig your own hot pool in the sand or explore the gateway to Cathedral Cove.
- Kauaeranga Valley (near Thames) – Before you head over, take a nature walk, visit the DOC visitor centre, or enjoy a picnic by the river.
